How Do We Protect Our Project?

Most of us ask ourselves this question during the planning process of our project and rightfully so. Unfortunately we live in a world that presents the potential for vandals to cause defacing, theft and destruction. While it is impossible to guarantee nothing will happen there are a few things we can do to deter these acts of malice. When undertaking a project, a little planning and adoption of some protective measures can provide a more of a piece of mind experience.

Don’t be a target

First, understand that installing substrates with a resale or salvage value makes your project a target for vandalism. It’s important your decision makers and committees fully realize that this is a real threat because of the times we all live in. Thousands of bronze and metal thefts are reported every year costing millions of dollars in damages and replacements. Fortunately etched granite has no resale value and is not a target for thieves. Secondly, installing proper lighting and procuring an open public space as a project location will further deter potential vandals and thefts.

Armed with the right product

Constructing you project with the high quality material is the first step. Since graffiti can sometimes be a potential issue it is extremely important that well polished tight grained granite is always used to help prevent the unwanted paint from being absorbed by the stone. Additionally, a comprehensive factory sealing procedure needs to be part of the etching process which will again help to prevent penetration. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the stone is important. Professional quality stone care 3-1 products can be used to clean, polish and protect from water spots and stains and can be used on any non-walking surface. Offering no build up, this treatment can be done bi-annually to protect and keep your project looking its best.

When the damage is done

Sometimes damage is inevitable and knowledge of the right tools and resources to repair that damage is helpful. Graffiti removal products are available on the market. These products can be sprayed on and wiped off and are known to be very successful on polished granite surfaces. In the event that this type of product needs to be used, a commercial grade re-sealer should be re-applied to ensure continued protection.  Lastly, it is sometimes possible to replace only portions of a project that have been damaged. Incorporating individual panels into the design of your project for example, will enable a single panel to be reproduced and re-installed if necessary.
