Vietnam Veterans Memorial becomes a reality

The November 11th dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park is a triumphant affirmation that plans are moving along as the first of the 12 planned theaters of war is celebrated.

A Noble Cause

Located on U.S. 301 just north of the Tampa Bypass Canal, the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial park has been undergoing renovations for over a year in it’s effort to create a memorial dedicated to all those from Hillsborough County who died while serving their country, while at the same time updating the entire park with a new entrance, picnic areas, Field of Honor location and many other features.

The Art of Battle

The central monument stands 12’ wide 6’ high and 8” thick and is built from solid black granite with the names of 153 officers inscribed on its face. The backside of the monument features PGHD® laser etched mural depicting Vietnam battle scenes. The artwork was created by artist Timothy Lawn currently serving in the United States Army Reserve with the Special Operations Command, Tampa, Florida.

A Unique Design

Led by memorial chairman Bob Silmser in its development, the purpose of the Vietnam Veterans monument is to Honor those who gave their lives in Vietnam from Hillsborough County. The memorial features several unique components, including two full size helicopters, a UH-1Huey and an AH-1F Cobra mounted on pedestals clad with PGHD® laser etched granite donor plaques.
